Description

Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) or complex IV is the terminal enzyme of the respiratory chain. COX catalyzes the transfer of electrons from reduced cytochrome c to molecular oxygen, a process that is coupled to the translocation of protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Defects in COX have been associated with various mitochondrial and neurodegenerative diseases. In mammals, COX is a 200 kDa enzyme, active as a dimer. Each monomer comprises 13 subunits encoded both by the nuclear and the mitochondrial genomes. The core of the complex is formed by three catalytic subunits that are encoded by the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The remaining subunits are encoded by the nuclear DNA. The human COX10 gene contains seven exons and the gene product is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and contains nine putative transmembrane domains
